1. aviation
: the designing, building and flying of aircraft
[Combating mitigation has become one of the great crusades in commercial aviation in the past fifteen years.]

2. slay-slew-slain
: 1) (old-fashioned or literary) to kill sb/sth in a war or a fight
   2) (especially AmE)(used especially in newspapers) to murder sb
[He had been slain from ambush.]

3. copilot = first officer
: a second pilot who helps the main pilot in an aircraft
[The copilot should have advocated for his own opinions in a stronger way... ]

4. squeamish
:1) easily upset, or made to feel sick by unpleasant sights or situations, especially when the sight of blood is involved
2) not wanting to do sth that might be considered dishonest or immoral
[Why are we so squeamish?]

5. predisposition
: a condition that makes sb/sth likely to behave in a particular way or to suffer from a particular disease
[Why is the fact that each of us comes from a culture with its own distinctive mix of strengths and weeknesses, tendencies and prepositions, so difficult to acknowledge?]

6. hierarchy
: a system, especially in a society or an organization, in which people are organized into different levels of importance from highest to lowest
[Power distance is concerned with attitudes toward hierarchy, specifically with how much a particular culture values and respects authority.]

7. unequivocal
: expressing your opinion or intention very clearly and firmly
opp. equivocal
[The results were unequivocal]

8. intimidating
: frightening in a way which makes a person feel  less confident
[If you are not used to that sort of give-and-take, New York ATC can be very, very intimidating. ]

9. mitigate
: to make sth less harmful, serious etc.
[ We mitigate when were being polite, or when were ashamed or embarrassed, or when were being deferential to authority. ]

10. oblivious
: not aware of sth
[ He seemed oblivious.]

11. incompetent
: not having the skill or ability to do your job or a task as it should be done
opp. competent
[But what happened with Avianca was just so strange - so seemingly inexplicable- that it demanded a more complete explanation than simply that Klotz was incompetent and the captain was tired. ]
