[Discussion Questions]
1. How did you respond to the concept of “practical intelligence” (defined by Gladwell as “knowing what to say to whom, knowing when to say it, and knowing how to say it for maximum effect”)? Were you surprised that this “practical intelligence” is a result of a sense of entitlement, commonly fostered in middle and upper-class families?
2. If we accept Gladwell’s findings that family and background are much more influential than raw talent and IQ, how should our society capitalize on these findings? How could we harness this untapped talent? What do Gladwell’s findings imply about the state of education in the U.S.?
3. At the end of Part One, Gladwell suggests the following:
“The sense of possibility so necessary for success comes not just from inside us or from our parents. It comes from our time: from the particular opportunities that our particular place in history presents us with.”
Were you surprised that our birth year could be important in our success? With regard to your own talents, can you imagine another time period that may have been more advantageous?
4. In your own life, have you found Gladwell’s assertion regarding satisfying work to be true? (“Those three things – autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and reward – are, most people agree, the three qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying.”)
