Choo Keng Kwang (b. 1931, Singapore) is widely recognised as one of Singapore’s first generation artists. In 1989, Choo’s oil paintings of Singapore Chinatown were selected for reproduction as postage stamps. These four pieces of Chinatown paintings featuring Smith Street, Temple Street, Trengganu Street and Pagoda Street, were then donated to the Singapore National Museum for its permanent collection. This postage stamp series was later made into First Day Covers.
My Journey, My Home features oil paintings by the artist in the last 50 years. In his earlier artworks, Choo’s paintings were largely inspired by 19th century British painter William Turner. His paintings become increasingly romantic in its dramatic subject-matter and sense of movement. Over the years, he continued to search and grow. With the influence of artistic form, his style has evolved into a fine blending of East and West – a style that is unmistakably his own.
My Journey, My Home, is presented by Asia JustArts, and is held at The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore. The exhibition is on view from November 5 till 17, 2015. Part of the proceeds from the sale of artworks will be contributed to the Singapore Philatelic Museum.
“All of us contribute to the society in different ways – money, time or ability. I’m just giving back to the society in the best way I could. I have chosen SPM as the charity organisation for this
exhibition as stamps are very similar to visual art – the images help to convey history and messages about Singapore.”
